Kira Plastinina's Lincoln Center Debut; Up Next for NYFW Designers

2011_02_lublu-kira-plastinina.jpg
LINCOLN CENTER—Racked National checked out yesterday's presentation by Kira Plastinina, the Russian heiress who built out a fast-fashion label in NYC a few years ago only to disappear when the recession hit. She's back and trying for a more sophisticated angle with her new line Lublu Kira Plastinina, but our sister site wasn't impressed. "The line's colors were limited to reds, blacks, nudes and whites—bubblegum pinks were markedly absent from the collection. Styles ranged from a teenager's vision of clean adult lines and high style, to designs that were, well, overly revealing. Or to use a term we would have used, back when we were a teenager, 'kind of slutty.'" [RNA; Previously]
NEW YORK CITY—When New York Fashion Week ends, the editors and bloggers and hangers-on all flock to London, then onward to Milan and Paris. But what about the designers? Fashion business consultant and friend of Racked Jessica Gold explains the next step to curious fashion neophytes in her blog Truth Plus. Extremely short version: Basically, the next few weeks are for the market period, when labels try to sell their collections wholesale. There's a ton of money at stake, and it's a stressful time for both designers and their sales staff. (This is especially true for all those cool little up-and-coming brands, where the designer often is the sales staff.) More details, plus peeks into designer showrooms, this way. [Truth Plus]

Behold the Many Fashion Week Outfits of Johnny Weir

Every season, there's one celebrity who makes a point of hitting as many runway shows as humanly possible. This time around, that celebrity was Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir. Not only did Weir perform in Elise Øverland's presentation at the Standard Hotel ice rink, but he also hit front rows all week long. As a tribute to the Fashion Week that just ended, please enjoy this slideshow of his finest moments above.

It Doesn't Get Any More Fantastically Sparkly Than The Blonds

Yesterday evening at Milk, a parade of drag queens (including the illustriousAmanda Lepore) made their way into the boxcar-like elevators and up into the front row of The Blonds' Fall 2011 runway show. That alone was spectacle enough, but oh no—this is The Blonds for heaven's sake, and it was about to getreal.
The lights dimmed, a brief but energetic video that exhibited The Blonds' inspiration played, and when the lights again went up, it wasn't models who emerged but two dancing Chinese lions. There were squeals of delight from the crowd, who still had yet to see a single fashion, but oh wow was the wait worth it. The first look—a majestically elaborate gold corset and panty set complete with Thai headdress and dangerously long finger jewelry—managed to overshadow the dancing lions and elicit applause that continued sporadically throughout the rest of the show.

Fashion Week Rivalry: Coke Versus Pepsi Promo Models

2011_02_CokePeps.jpg
With no Project Runway in the tents this season, the biggest Fashion Week rivalry at Lincoln Center has been the one between the Diet Pepsi and Diet Coke promo teams. Each has something to promote—Diet Pepsi their new, "skinny" cans and Diet Coke their involvement with the Red Dress charity—and each has hired and attired girls to pass out free soda to show-goers.
So who won the soda wars of Fashion Week? Was it the brunette Pepsi girls with their sparkling black strapless numbers? Or the blonde, all-American Coke girls with their simple, chic red dresses? You tell us—but we will say that we believe Pepsi handed out more free cans than Coke did.

Photog Bait of the Day: It's Mr. Wacky Suit Man!

Flash bulbs are the drug of choice during New York Fashion Week, for everyone from the models to the editors to the random passers-by outside the shows. Thus, there is much dressing for the camera, hoping that a lens focuses on the flamboyance. Each day during NYFW, we'll bring you the most obvious photog bait, as snapped by us.
2011_02_wackysuit.jpg
For this, the final day of Fall 2011 Fashion Week, we've caught a Photog Bait classic. This man, whom we affectionately dubbed "Mr. Wacky Suit Man" many seasons ago, is a chronic case of Photog Bait. Every fashion week, without fail, Mr. Wacky Suit Man will show up in a different, self-painted suit each day. Is it fashion if you wear the exact same suit style, just decorated with a new theme?
He will pose for photos, be interviewed by journalists needing colorful sound bites, and then just stand around drinking free wine and looking bored the rest of the time.
It's true we've seen him get into many shows, and in the past he even had a female partner-in-crime whom he dressed to match, but otherwise he just quietly blends into the level of crazy that goes hand-in-hand with Fashion Week. He may besomebody—in fact we recollect reading a profile on him seasons back—but we really prefer having a nickname for him and knowing not too much else.

Meet the Dapper Fellow Who Waters the Grass Inside the Tents

2011_02_tyler-stubbs-fashion-week-grass-guy.jpgHundreds of workers help maintain the tents atLincoln Center, but our favorite might be Tyler T. Stubbs, the well-dressed gentleman who keeps the topiary fixtures alive. Tyler is the production manager at McNabb Roick Events, which means that he's in charge of all manner of Fashion Week odd jobs. After a week of watching him water the plants in various debonair ensembles, Racked special Fashion Week correspondent Martin Mulkeen sat him down for an interview.
Racked: We are nearing the end of the week and the grass still looks so healthy and verdant! In fact, judging from overheard conversations, most people think the grass is fake. What's your secret?
Tyler: Keeping the grass green is tougher than it looks, but it is a hearty wheat grass so it tends to stay green on its own as long as there is water. In this heated tent, though, the grass constantly needs water.
